Local umpires earn berths in tourneys


Players and coaches aren’t the only baseball folks who work throughout the summer to advance to regional and World Series competition.

Umpires also can earn their way to the major tournaments, and several umpires from Eastern Maine have been selected to work upcoming championship tournaments.

Veteran Bangor Little League baseball umpire Chris Parker has been selected as one of two umpires to represent the U.S. East at this year’s Little League World Series, to be held at South Williamsport, Pa., from Aug. 21 to Aug. 30.

Another District 3 umpire, Troy Lare, is working the Little League Baseball Eastern Regional under way at Bristol, Conn., while Joseph Ouellette is umpiring at the Junior League Eastern Regional in Freehold Township, N.J.

Two other local umpires, Robert Curtis and Matt Donahue, are working at the Senior League Eastern Regional at West Deptford, N.J.

Two Eastern Maine softball umpires were selected to work at regional tournaments. Edward Parra of District 2 (Midcoast region) is at the Little League Softball Eastern Regional at Albany, N.Y., while Clark Cole of District 3 is at the Junior League Eastern Regional at West Haven, Conn.
