Moxie chugging champ crowned at Maine festival

LISBON, Maine — You’ve heard of hot dog and blueberry pie eating contests. Over the weekend, a 48-year-old Durham man laid claim to being the champion Moxie chugger.

Ken Carll out-drank a dozen other men Saturday to become the 2009 Moxie Chuggin’ Challenge champ. The competition took place at the 26th annual Moxie Festival in Lisbon that celebrates the quirky bittersweet soda that was concocted by a Mainer in the 1870s.

To win the contest, Carll drained a two-liter bottle in one minute, promptly followed by a Moxie chaser because he was still thirsty.

Carll told The Sun Journal of Lewiston that he was surprised he beat his 22-year-old son, who was home on leave from the Army and likes Moxie so much the family ships cans to him at Fort Polk, La.
