Is government-sponsored health care a viable option?

Will Congress respond to a recent poll that shows 72 percent of Americans supporting a government-sponsored health care plan to compete with private insurers? Most of those surveyed in the CBS News/New York Times poll also said they think the government would do a better job than private industry at keeping down costs and believe that the government should guarantee health care for all Americans. Will this mean a shift in Congress toward single-payer, or at least toward a public option being a large component of reform? Will insurance company lobbyists and corporate donors to campaigns hold sway? Or is a government-run plan a bad idea, representing the wrong fix?
