Jury returns guilty verdict in W. Paris killings

The Associated Press

PARIS, Maine — An Oxford County jury has come back with guilty verdicts in the double murder trial of a 33-year-old Sumner man.

After a full day of deliberations Tuesday, jurors found Duane Christopher Waterman guilty in last July’s shooting deaths of 50-year-old Timothy Mayberry of West Paris and 43-year-old Todd Smith of Paris.

The killings took place at Mayberry’s home, and the prosecution said Waterman had been dealing drugs for Mayberry and owed him money. Waterman took the stand and denied having any part in the shootings.

He was returned to the county jail to await sentencing. Murder in Maine is punishable by 25 years to life in prison.
