AUGUSTA, Maine — Despite a slumping economy, sales of Allen’s Coffee Brandy increased in Maine last year, keeping the label firmly atop the list of best-selling brands of liquor in the state, according to official statistics.

Approximately 1,063,000 bottles of Allen’s Coffee Brandy sold in Maine for a total of more than $12.8 million in 2008, according to figures posted online by the state’s Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations. The figures represent increases of $600,000 in value and 39,000 bottles in volume from the brand’s to-tals in 2007.

The sales figures are totals for four bottle sizes of Allen’s Coffee Brandy, each of which is ranked among the state’s top-selling liquor units. The state, which does not keep totals for wine and beer sales, separately tracks sales of each bottle size for all the liquor brands sold in Maine.

Different sizes of Allen’s Coffee Brandy ranked first, third, sixth and seventh in terms of the number of bottles sold in 2008. No other brand appears more than once on the state’s list of top-10 selling units.

The second-most-popular brand in Maine last year was Orloff Vodka, which sold more than 276,000 bottles of varying sizes with a total value of $2.7 million. Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum placed second behind Allen’s in terms of sales value, with more than 264,000 bottles selling for $5.2 million. Captain Morgan’s sales in-creased slightly in both value and volume in 2008, while Orloff’s totals in both categories were slightly down from the previous year.

Bacardi Light Rum, which consistently ranks in Maine’s top four brands for liquor sales, sold more than 171,000 bottles for a total value of just under $3.4 million in Maine last year. Like Orloff, those figures represent declines in the brand’s sales from 2007.
