BROOKSVILLE – Thomas A. Churchill Sr., 82, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at his home, after an extended illness. Tom was born Dec. 13, 1926, in East Bridgewater, Mass., the son of Luther and Sarah (Perkins) Churchill. Tom served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was very proud of his service to his country. Tom and his family moved to Maine in 1971, after several visits and falling in love with its beauty and people. For many years he was a welding instructor at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, from which he later retired. He was admired by his students who often kept in contact with him for years after graduation, being welcomed into his home for dinner anytime. Tom enjoyed life and helped others do the same with his sense of humor at all times. He was widely known for entertaining family and friends with stories of his youth and later exploits, sharing and swapping tales with others as if they were recipes. He enjoyed the outdoors – fishing, hunting and boating. He loved to make and edit family videos, and always closely monitored the stock market. At 77, he learned how to use, love and eventually tolerate computers. He will be missed and remembered by many. He is survived by his son, Thomas Churchill Jr. of Brooksville; daughter, Elin MacKinnon and her husband, Carl Faulstick, of Orono; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; his son, Eric Sr.; and two grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to remember Tom 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at West Brooksville Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Hancock County Homecare & Hospice, 82 Water St., P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
