Gay marriage backers urge Maine governor's support

AUGUSTA, Maine — Supporters of same-sex marriages in Maine delivered thousands of postcards to Gov. John Baldacci asking him to support a bill giving legal status to marriages between any two people, not just man and woman.

Supporters say they delivered 10,000 post cards on Monday to the office of Baldacci, who remains undecided on the issue. In a State House news conference, they also talked about their legislative lobbying efforts a day before the Judiciary Committee again takes up an issue that drew thousands to a hearing in Augusta last week.

EqualityMaine and the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence also unveiled books that include interviews with 82 people who tell about the impact on their families of not having a gay marriage law. Copies are being distributed to lawmakers.
