BREWER and BANGOR – Avis M. (Campbell) Flynn, 89, died peacefully April 26, 2009, after a brief illness, with her family by her side. She was born June 3, 1919, in Orono, the daughter of Robert and Frances E. (Bartlett) Campbell. Avis graduated from Brewer High School in 1937. After her marriage in 1944, she moved to New Hampshire and then on to New Jersey. She became employed as a personal assistant to one of the executives of Educational Testing Services, Princeton, N.J. After this, she moved back to Brewer and in 1964, worked closely with her husband, Robert W. Flynn, in the building of a local beverage company, Maine Distributors. Avis saw her true role in life as a wife and mother. She had been a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and an active member of the women’s auxiliary. Avis was a member of Bangor Art Society. She was an avid artist who painted many beautiful watercolors, which she enjoyed giving away, particularly to fundraising events. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Flynn; and by a brother, Robert Campbell. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Paul Dudley of Bangor; son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Margaret Ames Flynn of Northeast Harbor; four grandchildren, Paul Robert Dudley, Megan Ames Flynn, Moria Flynn Riordan and Elizabeth Dudley Page; four great-grandchildren, Lauren, Paige, Ava and Isabella; a brother, Edward Campbell and his wife, Blanche, of Orrington; two sisters, Corinne Gordon of Stillwater and Eleanor England of Veazie; two sisters-in-law, Tina Campbell of Brewer and Roselle Cassidy Flynn of Kennebunk; many nieces and nephews; many loyal and dear friends which include, Mary Dresser, Pat Miller, Julia Rand, Margaret Black, Helen Hardy and Dr. Beverly Bartlett. The family expresses their appreciation for the kindness and care given to Avis by Dr. Robert Allen; the fifth floor staff of St. Joseph Hospital; Ross Manor’s Waterman Wing; and Bangor Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice. Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North Main Street, Brewer. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the burial at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
