CAPE ELIZABETH – Bessie M. Burkitt, 92, of Pilot Point Road, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, in Scarborough, after a brief illness. She was born in Limington, a daughter of Joseph and Nellie Meserve Chick. Mrs. Burkitt attended Limington schools and graduated from Limington Academy in 1936. She also graduated from Maine General School of Nursing in 1939 and was a registered nurse. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church, South Portland, and was an active worker at the annual Holy Daze Bazaar. “Chickie” was a member of Women of Rotary and was a longtime volunteer at Maine Medical Center, Portland. Time spent working in her garden, on the golf course or at camp provided great pleasure. Bessie’s favorite moments were those shared with family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her fondest joy. Mrs. Burkitt was the wife of the late Norman A. Burkitt, founder of N.A. Burkitt, who passed away in 1966. Also predeceasing her were brothers, Raymond Chick and Gordon Fraser. Surviving are her two daughters, Norma J. Crichton and her ex-husband, Stephen, of Bangor and Nancy R. Hart and her husband, Peter, of Atkinson, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Kristine A. Eremita and her husband, Nicholas, of South Portland, Kimberly B. Crichton of Portland, Scot B. Crichton and wife, Rebecca Ingalls, of Philadelphia, Jon David Crichton of Frisco, Colo., Mark S. Crichton of Bangor, Luke J. Hart and wife, Kimberly, of Arlington, Mass., and Adam L. Hart of Vail, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren, Isabella, Kristiana and Nicholas Eremita of South Portland and Benjamin Hart of Arlington, Mass. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maine Medical Center, Special Care Unit, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.
