Baldacci: Budget situation not hopeless

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Gov. John Baldacci says Maine’s worsening budget situation is not hopeless. And he reiterates a promise not to raise taxes to bail the state out.

Baldacci gave his weekend radio address Saturday, a day after lawmakers were told they probably face a new budget gap of $560 million to $590 million.

Baldacci says that in early May, he’ll present changes to bring the budget into balance with those dire revenue predictions. He rules out raising taxes, saying that would be a mistake during a time when the economy is already fragile. Baldacci says more spending cuts, restructuring and consolidation will be needed.

He says the budget picture is difficult, “but we are not in a hopeless situation.”
