Islanders ask PUC to void ferry rate hike

PORTLAND, Maine — Peaks Island residents trying to stave off a fare increase by the ferry line that serves the Casco Bay islands want help from the Public Utilities Commission.

The Casco Bay Transit District increase is scheduled to take effect May 1. It would raise average passenger fares by 95 cents to $1.05 during peak season and 35 cents to 45 cents in the off season.

Howard Pedlikin, who’s leading the effort to block the increase, says the district’s board has raised fares by 49 percent over the past five years. The petition asks the PUC to order the ferry line to reject higher fares and order the district to cut costs instead.
