BREWER and MACHIAS – Josephine W. Smith, 94, of Machias, went to be with the Lord April 20, 2009, at Brewer Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 19, 1915, in Starboard, daughter of the late James and Grace Sprague. Josephine graduated from Washington Academy, East Machias, in 1932 and went on to become very active in local affairs. She was a member of Machias Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Irene Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Irsula Peniman Club, Machias Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Extension Service as a homemaker and Court Street Congregational Church. She will always be remembered as a warm, loving and caring mother who devoted her entire life to her family and others. Her zest for living and positive attitude towards people and life in general was an inspiration to her family and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Norman K. Smith, January 1996; her parents; and a brother, Keith Sprague of Old Greenwich, Conn. Survivors include her five sons, Douglas K. Smith and his wife, Anne, of Hermon, N. Kenneth Smith and his wife, Rachel, of Islesboro, Ernest J. Smith and his wife, Regina, of Howland, Gregory B. Smith and his wife, Fraya, of Charlotte, Vt., and Craig L. Smith of Whiting. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, as well as 17 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Cooper Street, Machias, with Pastor John Sprague officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be held at Birch Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
