HODGDON – Gerald “Buzzy” Howard, 76, died April 20, 2009, at a local hospital. He was born June 25, 1932, in Hodgdon, the son of Burchard and Minnie (Sanford) Howard. Buzzy was a graduate of Hodgdon High School, Class of 1951, where he lettered in all four years in basketball, baseball and track. He coached Little League Baseball in Connecticut, played Junior Legion Ball in Houlton and umpired many baseball games. He was a member of Hodgdon United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows of Rockabema Lodge and Houlton Community Golf Club. Through the years he was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Wirthmoor Feeds, Inc., Grossmans Building Supply, Hortens Building Supply and Northern Maine Sports Shop. He was a jack-of-all-trades and barbered with Bill Brewer for several years. To brighten the lives of others, he wrote many poems for the elderly and nursing home patients. He loved hunting and fishing and after years of gathering golf balls, enjoyed his many rounds of golf with friends, Bob Rush and Norville Hersey. Buzzy is survived by his loving wife and companion of 51 1/2 years, Marylin (Buker) Howard; sister, Madeline “Dee” Hand of Hodgdon; special aunts, Elizabeth (Long) Howard of Kiehei, Hawaii, and Theresa Howard of Southbridge, Mass.; two nephews, Travis Hand and Trent Hand; one niece, Tracy (Hand) Progrocki; two stepsons, Roy Hatch of Waterville and Keith Hatch of North Jay; and granddaughter, April Merritt of Houlton. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Wayne; sisters, Helen Howard and Virginia (Howard) Faulkner; nephew, Duane Faulkner; and special uncles, Alfred Howard and Donald Howard. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Marilyn Rohdin officiating.
