SANDY POINT – Earle C. Brooks, 89, passed away peace-fully April 17, 2009, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a Bangor hospital. Earle was born Sept. 20, 1919, in East Corinth, the son of Harry L. Brooks and Faye (Amero) Brooks. After graduation from East Corinth Academy while working in Massachusetts, Earle was called upon to enter the U.S. Army, where he served both in World War II and Korea. During World War II in England, he met his future wife of 63-plus years, Marjorie J. Smart. In May 1945, they were married in Northleach, England. Earle and Marjorie had tours in Japan, Germany, Austria and the United States during his Army career. In 1963 he retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel with a distinguished career. Upon retirement they moved their family to their home in Sandy Point. Earle went to work at the chemical plant in Searsport as personnel manager, retiring after almost 20 years of service. Active in local politics, he served as first selectman for the town of Stockton Springs, was a proud umpire for the Little League program for many years, was active in the local Scout program and supported Searsport High School athletics programs by developing and printing the programs for all the athletic events. His interests in being involved in the community included serving on the board for Bucksport Regional Health Center for a number of years, active with Penobscot Valley Council of Governments and Waldo County Development Committee. He and Marjorie were active within the Belfast Stamp Club for many years. Earle also served as president of the Maine Philatelic Society. Earle is survived by his wife, Marjorie Brooks of Sandy Point; their children, Victor Brooks and wife, Lorraine, of Searsport, Robert Brooks and wife, Margaret, of Strasburg, Va., Joan (Brooks) Lanpher and husband, Charles, of Bradford, Clyde Brooks and wife, Wendy, of Sandy Point and David Brooks and wife, Stacy, of Bangor; his grandchildren, Heather (Brooks) Wood and husband, Jamie, of Alton Bay, N.H., Matthew Hancock of Strasburg, Va., Megan and Chelsea Lanpher of Bradford, Jordan and Colby Brooks of Bangor, Jason and Alicen Brooks of Sandy Point; three great-grandchildren, Bryan Wood and Ashley Wood, both of Alton Bay, N.H., and Samantha Hancock of Strasburg, Va. Earle is also survived by a brother, George Brooks and wife, Mary, of Williamsburg, Va.; a sister, Edith Brooks of Las Vegas; several nieces and nephews. There will be a gathering 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Brooks’ home, 93 Sandy Point Road, Sandy Point. Earle’s ashes will be spread over his beloved flower gardens at a later date.
