On April 15 — the day federal income taxes were due — people from around the U.S. protested President Obama’s budget and stimulus package and other government spending in Tax Day Tea Party demonstrations. Estimates of the numbers of parties held were 300, 700 and 1,000. Estimates of the number of participants ranged from 268,000 (liberal-leaning MSNBC) to 1 million (Fox News host and tea party booster Glenn Beck). What will the impact of these events be? Were they “Astro turf,” as in fake grassroots? Or were they the beginnings of an angry citizenry, mobilizing to rein-in government spending?
