ATHENS, Ga. – Dr. William E. Townsend, 81, died in the Lord, March 23, 2009, in Athens, Ga., where he lived for 40 years. He was formerly from Island Falls. A 1953 graduate of the University of Maine, William received his doctorate from Michigan State in 1958. He worked nearly 30 years as a food technologist for the Department of Agriculture and served in the Army-Air Corps from 1945 to 1948. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, Ga. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lilly Townsend; his son, Larry; daughter, Andrea Townsend-Purdy; as well as two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Almon; and sister, Madeline Hawkes. He was predeceased by his brother, Wallace Townsend of Island Falls.
