FREDERICK ‘BILL’ COATES JR.

NEWPORT – Frederick W. Coates Jr., 61, died April 14, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 22, 1947, in New Haven, Conn., a son of Frederick and Shirley (Gell) Coates Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Bill served in the Branford, Conn., police department for a number of years and after moving to Maine in 1977, was a police officer for the town of Newport, later serving as police chief. He was a Mason, as well as a former member and deacon of High Street Congregational Church, Newport. In addition to his mother of Branford, Conn.; he is survived by his wife, Cindy (Hand) Coates of Newport; two sons, Derick and his wife, Sarah, and Shawn; five daughters, Tammy and husband, David Pacileo, Heather and husband, Scott Elderkin, Ashley and husband, Justin Metivier, Chelsea Coates and fiance, Peter Chase, and Sarah Coates; two brothers, David and wife, Winifred, and Thomas; a sister, Barbara and husband, John Hinckley; seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family thanks CancerCare of Maine for all of their help during Bill’s illness. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to Newport Memorial VFW Post No. 11191, 123 Main St., Newport, ME 04953, to help with establishing the Veterans’ Memorial Park.
