NESCom students win audio recording award

BANGOR, Maine — The New England School of Communications, through the recording and mixing talents of five audio engineering students, has won the Shure Microphone Fifth Annual Fantastic Scholastic recording competition for 2009, an achievement that will bring the school a scholarship and equipment valued at nearly $22,000.

NESCom won the national contest with its recording of the song “The Never Ending Story” by local musicians Samuel Chase and Yuri Trusty. The winning entree was the product of three months of recording sessions with various musical elements and the mixing of the combined talents into the final product, which was judged by Grammy-winning sound engineers from all over the country, according to a press release from Ben Haskell, executive vice president and academic dean at the college.

Recordings were judged on clarity of sound, microphone technique, mixing technique and performance-production. In addition to creating a very complex and compelling recording, each microphone placement had to be photographed and documented as part of the project. Students that engineered the recording were juniors Jacob Lansky of Springfield and Bangor; Levi Gray of Hartland, Vt.; Tyrus Michaud of Bangor; Cameron Smith of Portland and Joshua Strange of Fryeburg.

As the grand-prize-winning team, NESCom receives a $3,000 scholarship and 21 types of microphones. Each participating student also receives his own microphone, each valued at more than $1,000.

Shure Inc. manufactures and distributes microphones and related audio equipment worldwide.

Cooperating in the music recording were four members of the Bangor Symphony and Susan Patten, a NESCom faculty member, who provided a flute selection. Other NESCom students supplying background accompaniment were Eleanor Kipping of Alton, vocals, and Yannick Moutassie of Cameroon on the tambourine.
