MELROSE, Mass. – Mrs. Phyllis (Hedin) Smith, 99, a longtime Melrose, Mass., resident, passed away Saturday morning, April 11, 2009, at Wingate at Reading Nursing Home, Reading, Mass., after a period of declining health. Mrs. Smith was born July 9, 1909, in Augusta, one of two daughters to the late Carl J. Hedin and Julia (Lowell) Hedin. Mrs. Smith was raised in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School and Wheaton College in 1931. She served on the board at Fitch Home, Melrose, Mass., and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. She was a member and past president of Phi Theta Xi in Melrose, Mass., and a member of Circle 19 at First Congregational Church. Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late J. Philip Smith with whom she shared 54 years of marriage; loving mother of Carl H. Smith and his wife, Ruth, of Denver, and Sarah-Jane Swain and her husband, Ronald, of Reading; dear sister of the late Dr. Constance Carlson; cherished grandmother of Anne M. Smith of Pembroke, N.H., A. Philip Smith of Denver, Christina L. Swain of Newburyport, Mass., and Ronald W. Swain of Wakefield, Mass.; cherished great-grandmother of Lilah B. Swain of Newburyport and Peter E. Swain of Wakefield; dear aunt of Julia Carlson Kilroy of Galway, Ireland. A funeral service celebrating Phyllis’ life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, at First Congregational Church, 121 West Foster St., Melrose, Mass.
