Houlton police officers lauded by council

HOULTON, Maine — Three police officers who town officials said were instrumental in cracking a burglary case late last year were recognized by town councilors Monday evening.

Houlton Police Department Detective Carolyn Crandall, Sgt. Eric Crouse and Officer Jerad Sylvia, were lauded during the meeting for their work toward the arrest of two suspects sought in connection with a Nov. 10, 2008, burglary at Andy’s IGA.

Adam Maguire, 24, of Houlton and John A. Belyea Jr., 25, of Smyrna were arrested and charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief stemming from the early morning burglary.

Belyea is a former employee of the store, but Maguire is not. Belyea had not been employed at the store for several months.

The burglary took place after a torch was used to cut an entry into the overhead loading dock door of the store. A torch then was used to burn through the safe door.

Approximately $15,000 in cash, a number of cigarettes and the store’s video surveillance system were taken.

The burglary was discovered after an employee arrived at the IGA about 5:30 a.m.

Both suspects were taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

Town Manager Doug Hazlett said Tuesday that the officers worked tirelessly while investigating the case.

“I think that when you have the caliber of work that was shown by these officers, that effort should be recognized,” he said.

Police Chief Butch Asselin agreed.

“I am extremely pleased that the council chose to recognize them,” he said Tuesday. “These officers are very thorough and worked hard on this case. We are lucky to have these three officers and the other officers in this department who perform the same caliber of work. This speaks well for our department.”

The two suspects are expected to appear in court in the coming months. No date for their appearances has been set.
