Bill would force bicycles to stop for school buses

AUGUSTA, Maine — It’s illegal for cars and trucks to pass a stopped school bus in Maine.

A legislator now wants to expand the law so bicyclists would also have to stop for buses that have their red lights flashing.

WCSH-TV says Sen. John Nutting introduced his bill after a Winthrop school bus driver watched a bicyclist pass his stopped bus and narrowly miss two kindergarten students.

The bill, which will be heard in a workshop session Thursday, currently faces no opposition. If it passes, the law would also apply to motorized bicycles, motorized tricycles and motorized scooters.
