ELLSWORTH – Stefka Blagomirova Petkova, 48, died April 11, 2009, at her home. She was born Jan. 26, 1961, in Sofromievo, Bulgaria, daughter of Blagomir and Tsvetana Toshev. Stefka graduated from Sofia University in 1987 and followed an academic career in microbiology and immunology. She came to the U.S. in 1997 with her husband and son, and had been a resident of Ellsworth since 2001. Her research at Jackson Laboratory was focused on rheumatoid arthritis. She enjoyed outdoor activities, gardening and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Petko; their son, Michael, both of Ellsworth; her mother and father; one sister, Mariela and her husband, Sacho, of Sofromievo, Bulgaria; one niece, Iliana; and one nephew, Blagovest. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Ivanka Mileva and her husband, Stoyan and their sons, Yordan and Miroslav; a father-in-law, Marko and mother-in-law, Radka Boev, of Triavna, Bulgaria. A funeral service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Adam Metropoulus officiating.
