UM-Farmington, St. Joe’s split

At Standish, Craig Pendleton allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to its first win, a 4-3 victory over Saint Joseph’s College in the nightcap. The Monks won the first game 5-1. In the first game, Wade Oliver doubled and drove in two runs to pace Saint Joseph’s College. Michael Burdin tripled and scored a run. Connor McNeill hit a fifth-inning solo home run for the Beavers’ only run. In the second game, Pat Howell doubled, singled and scored two runs for the Beavers (1-5). Josh Garneau doubled and singled. Steve Hutchinson and McNeill each singled twice. Eric LaBatte doubled, singled and knocked in a run for the Monks (16-9). Chris Campbell and Daniel Achorn also hit doubles.

Trinity 14, Bates 2

At Lewiston, Trinity College of Hartford, Conn. pounded 17 hits and scored 14 runs as the Bantams defeated Bates College. James Wood drove in four runs to lead Trinity (16-3). Sean Killeen scored three runs and Jack Abbott hit three singles. Ryan Piacentini and Sam Simons homered. Chris Burke doubled, singled, scored a run and had an RBI for Bates (7-11). Tyler Maxwell hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and Gordy Webb doubled.

Bowdoin 4, Colby 0

At Brunswick, Pat Driscoll went the distance as Bowdoin College defeated Colby of Waterville. Driscoll allowed five hits and no walks while striking out five for Bowdoin. He didn’t allow a Colby batter to reach second base. Matt Ruane hit a solo homer and scored two runs for the Polar Bears (14-12). Reid Auger singled twice with a run scored and an RBI. John LaMantia, Kyle McKay, Ryan Conlon, Taro Gold and John Lerner singled for Colby (5-10).

Southern Maine 13, UMass Boston 12

At Waltham, Mass., senior Anthony D’Alfonso hit a home run and three singles in six at bats and drove in five runs as the University of Southern Maine narrowly defeated University of Massachusetts Boston. Josh Mackey had a double, two singles and three RBIs for the Huskies (18-3). Anthony Pisani hit a triple and Collin Henry added two singles and two RBIs. Connor Reinfurt had two doubles, two singles and four RBIs to lead UMass Boston (8-15). Tim Fontaine hit a double and two singles to knock in three runs.

Colby-Sawyer 8, UM-Presque Isle 7

At New London, N.H., Colby-Sawyer College scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first scheduled game. The second game was declared a no-contest after player injuries in the fifth inning. In the first game, Tom White tripled and singled with two RBIs to lead Colby-Sawyer (10-13). Chris Hartery added two RBIs. Tyson Tash led UMPI (9-15) with a triple, single, run scored and an RBI. Brandon Elie doubled and drove in two runs and Seth Dorr doubled and singled with an RBI.

Husson sweeps Thomas

At Waterville, Nick Arthers hit a home run and a double for three RBIs as Husson University of Bangor beat Colby College 6-2 in the opener. The Eagles also topped the Mules 11-1 in the nightcap. In the first game, Chris Maguire hit two singles and scored two runs for Husson. Kyle Vanidestine also scored two runs. Jared Fieldsend doubled and knocked in a run for Thomas. Kyle Gallant also hit a double. In the second game, Vanidestine had two doubles, a single, three runs scored and two RBIs for the Eagles. Ethan Guerrette doubled and singled with three RBIs and two runs and Nick Arthers tripled and singled with two RBIs. Dennis Graham had two singles and two runs driven in. Mike Busa singled with an RBI to lead Thomas. Joe Biondi, Tom Desjardins and Jake Jandreau also singled.

SOFTBALL

Western Connecticut sweeps Southern Maine

At Gorham, Amy Hartman hit a three-run homer in a five-run fifth inning that helped lead Western Connecticut State University to a 6-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the second game. The Colonials also took the first game 6-3. In the first game, Anna Levesque doubled and singled with two RBIs to pace the Colonials. Loren Angiolillo added two singles and an RBI. Jessica Hayden hit two doubles and a single for the Huskies. Lauren DiCecco had two singles and two RBIs. In the second game, Meghan Mammone hit a two-run single in the fifth for the Colonials (12-8). Levesque doubled and singled. The Huskies (2-22) scattered four singles among four batters.

Bates 8, Bowdoin 1

At Lewiston, Monica Berube hit a two-run home run in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth to help lead Bates College past Bowdoin College of Brunswick. Lauren Dobish added a two-run double in the second for Bates (7-10). Val Beckwith doubled and Jean McIntyre had a single and an RBI. Kristen Finn allowed one run and four walks while scattering eight hits and striking out three to earn her fourth win. Clare Ronan was a triple shy of the cycle by hitting a single, double and home run for Bowdoin (15-11). Shavonne Lord doubled and singled.

Tufts shuts out Colby twice

At Medford, Mass., Tufts University rolled over Colby College of Waterville by shutting them out in two straight. Tufts beat Colby 8-0 in both games. In the first game, Samantha Kuhles hit a solo home run for the Jumbos. Casey Sullivan added two singles and two RBIs and Lena Cantone had two singles and drove in a run. Izzie Santone allowed just one hit and no walks through five scoreless innings to pick up her 11th win. Christine Gillespie singled in the fourth inning for Colby. In the second game, Mira Lieman-Sifry homered and doubled to drive in five runs for the host Jumbos (23-0). Sullivan added two singles and two runs scored. Lauren Gelmetti improved to 10-0 by allowing no runs and scattering four hits and three walks while striking out five through five innings. Allyson Cheever, Alyssa Lepore, Barbara Santo and Gillespie singled for the Mules (11-6).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Husson 17, Elms 2

At Bangor, Shelby Bradford scored six goals and assisted another as Husson University defeated Elms College to earn its third straight win. Caitlyn Butterfield had two goals and an assist for the 3-3 Eagles. Caitlin Ramsey, Jami Ladd and Kaylee Godan each had two goals. Alex Huffman, Tracie Cyr and Rebecca Hatin also scored. Stephanie Perry saved eight of 10 shots. Katlyn Harrington and Jessica Shea scored first-half goals for 0-10 Elms. Emily Walsh provided an assist. Holly Braziel turned away 25 of 42 shots.
