Baldacci: Vermont gay marriage vote no influence on Maine debate

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says he’s not influenced by the Vermont Legislature’s passage of a gay marriage bill as similar legislation works its way through the Maine Legislature.

The governor, who previously opposed gay marriage, says he’s keeping an open mind and that he’s taking a “wait and see” attitude as he awaits the legislative debate.

In an interview, Baldacci told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Mainers are listening to what’s going on in Vermont and other states and can learn from that. But he says Maine will consider gay marriage in its own way, and in a respectful way.

Mail to his office is running heavily against the bill to recognize gay marriages.
