HAMPDEN, Maine — The Hampden Academy class of 2009 Project Graduation committee will sponsor its second annual Dancing Like the Stars competition at 7 p.m. Saturdays, April 11 and 18, in the new gym. Seven students are paired with dancers from the Back Door Dance studio in Eddington. The eighth couple is made up of two seniors who are being trained by instructors at the studio. The couples have been practicing for seven weeks in preparation for the event.

The first night will consist of all eight couples doing a swing dance. They will be evaluated by three judges on their technique and showmanship. The fate of the dancers lies in the hands of the audience.

At the end of the competition, everyone will have a chance to cast votes by making monetary donations into each dancer’s jar. The six couples who bring in the most money will advance to compete in the second round on Saturday, April 18.

In that round, the top six couples will have a chance to do a dance of their choice.

Proceeds will support the class of 2009 Project Graduation. The committee has plans to bus students to Portland for a night out at sea on a Casco Bay cruise ship where they will enjoy music, food, caricaturists, games and a hypnotist show.

Project Graduation offers graduates a chemical-free celebration of their accomplishments.
