LEWISTON – Grace E. Hughes, 75, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at a Lewiston hospital. She was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Fort Kent, the youngest of seven children born to Preston and Elizabeth (Walker) Hughes of Allagash. She graduated from Caribou High School in 1951 and built a career as a medical transcriptionist at Cary Medical Center, Caribou, and later for the state Workers Compensation Commission, Augusta. She loved talking politics, reading, bird watching and playing Scrabble, all of which she did well. Grace was predeceased by a daughter, Geri (Page) Dingeldein; her parents, all of her siblings; and a son-in-law, Lee Mockler. She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Page) Evans and her husband, Greg and granddaughter, Juliette, of Carlsbad, Calif., Liz (Page) Mockler of Bangor and grandsons, Rod Chapman and his wife, Lori, and Robert Chapman of Augusta, and great-grandchildren, Ethan Chapman and Olivia Chapman; Ava Page of Sidney and her husband, Richard Downe and grandsons, Benjamin Baird and Ryan Baird; and her two sons, Louis Page of Westbrook and Stuart Page of Otisfield. She also is survived by grandson, Anthony “Tony” Dingeldein and his wife, Diana, of San Jose, Calif.; and great-granddaughter, Kaia Dingeldein. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the chapel of Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou.
