Kenduskeag telecast will be sorely missed

I was shocked to read (BDN, April 2) that WABI-TV of Bangor has cut the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race from their schedule as “a cost-saving measure.” What a disservice to our community and the racers to ax this welcome-to-spring event!

Our family has watched this race for many years and will certainly miss it this year. If I recall, over the years, there have been dozens of companies stepping in to help by providing financial support for this race to be televised. Are those companies not willing or unable to give financial support this year? It’d be nice to know that.

The article further states that “possibly some University of Maine games will not be covered as in years past as a cost-saving measure.” I wonder if the companies who have given financial support over the years are pulling support. I can understand why there need to be cuts, if that’s the case, but the article doesn’t give that in-formation. If the support is still there, why make those cuts? This is rural Maine, after all, and having these events on our local station is a wonderful thing for those who cannot make it out to the event.

I certainly hope the Maine hockey games won’t be cut; they help us get through that long winter season!

As a side note, I was shocked to see that longtime anchor, Craig Colson was cut from the station. He was “the news anchor” in our home, as WABI has been the channel we watch for news. We’ll certainly miss him and wish him the best.
