BANGOR – Marion Springer Smith, 90, died April 6, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Lamoine, the daughter of Edgar and Annie (Tinker) Springer. Marion was 7 years old when she went to live at Good Will Hinckley, after her mother passed away in 1926. She lived there until she completed the eighth grade at which time she went to live with her sister, Beryl Ritchie, in Augusta. She attended and graduated from Cony High School in 1937, where she met and later married, Philip H. Smith, in 1945. Marion was a devoted wife, homemaker, and a caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her 49 years on Crestmont Road, Bangor, spending time with family and friends. She had many memorable years at the camp she and Phil built at Beech Hill Pond. Marion was an avid bowler and for many years enjoyed spending her Tuesday evenings with her bowling team at Family Fun Lanes. She had the opportunity to travel with her bowling buddies to compete in tournaments in such places as Seattle, Las Vegas and Hawaii. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carole and Hank Clarke of West Lebanon, N.H., and Cheryl and Brent Hardy of Dedham; four grandchildren, Wendi Clarke of Malden, Mass., Stephanie Gunn of Lebanon, N.H., Jeffrey Hardy of Holden, and Michelle Cust of Ellsworth; and three great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Camren Gunn, and Bailey Cust. She is also survived by her sister, Laura Sawyer. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five brothers, three sisters; and her husband, Philip. The family wishes to thank the staff at Westgate Manor for their loving care. There will be a private family service June 6 at Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta.
