Maine airport reopened after security scare

PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland International Jetport is back in operation after a nearly four-hour shutdown that began when security screeners spotted a suspicious object in a carry-on bag.

The item was found at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, prompting the evacuation of the secure area of the passenger terminal.

Ann Davis of the Transportation Security Administration said screening of passengers was suspended, police were notified and Portland’s bomb squad was summoned.

There was no immediate word on the identification of the suspicious item, which was removed from the area by police. Davis said TSA screening resumed at 2:18 p.m.
