Lukas sparks Maine

WINTER PARK, Fla. — The University of Maine Black Bears pounded out 17 hits — three each by Billy Cather and Jarrett Lukas of Old Town — to knock off Rollins College 11-2 Friday in the Rollins College Baseball Week Tournament.

Cather and Lukas each hit home runs for the 9-6 Bears. Lukas had two RBIs and scored two runs while Cather drove in one and scored two. Ian Leisenheimer and Brewer’s Kevin McAvoy each had two singles, a run and two RBIs. Tony Patane had two singles.

Keith Bilodeau (1-2) picked up his first win of the season by allowing five hits and one run (earned) in seven solid innings of work. The freshman righthander struck out three batters and walked four.

Taylor Ferguson and Ben Hewett led the 14-9 Tars with a single and a double apiece.

The Bears got off to a fast start with six runs in the first inning. Ian Leisenheimer started things off with a one-out, RBI single through the left side. Three straight RBI singles follwed with Justin Leisenheimer going up the middle, McAvoy hitting one to right, and Lukas hitting his down the left field line. McAvoy scored on a wild pitch and Joe Mercurio got an RBI groundout.

Lukas hit a solo homer in the fifth and Cather led off the sixth with his round-tripper.

The Bears capped their scoring with two more in the seventh via Ian Leisenheimer’s fielder’s choice RBI grounder and Joey Martin’s RBI single up the middle.

Maine, which has now won five of its last six games, is back in action today with a 2:30 p.m. game against Georgetown University.
