Ellsworth woman dies in two-vehicle crash

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local woman died in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on the Surry Road.

Nancy Willey, 58, was pulling out of a driveway on the Surry Road at about 2:45 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department. She pulled into the path of a full-sized Chevy pickup truck driven by Andrew Peterson, 39, of Sedgwick, who was headed toward Surry.

The truck hit Willey’s vehicle broadside. Willey died at the scene.

Page said it did not appear that Willey’s view of the road had been blocked by the snow banks along the road, which had been plowed back.

Peterson and a passenger, Ruth Sullivan, 40, of Blue Hill, suffered minor injuries in the accident. They were taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital by an Ellsworth police officer, were treated and later released.

The accident is still under investigation. Police will check blood alcohol levels, which is standard procedure in a fatal accident. Page said there was no indication that speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.

The accident tied up traffic on the Surry Road for about two hours.
