BANGOR — Senior center Cal Shorey hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 17 seconds left Saturday night to lift Calais to a 40-39 victory over
Dirigo of Dixfield and its third Class C boys basketball state championship in the last four years.
Shorey, who rarely shot 3-pointers during the season, took a pass from classmate Jordan Leeman to the right of the key and calmly sank the long-range shot to rally Calais from a 39-37 deficit.
Dirigo had one final possession and got the ball to 6-foot-9 center Thomas Knight, but the Notre Dame-bound senior hit the back of the rim with his 8-foot shot and Calais guard Jeremy Carr rebounded as time expired.
Shorey finished with 16 points — eight in the fourth quarter — and eight rebounds while limiting Knight to 8 of 24 shooting from the field en route to 20 points.
Carr added 11 points and Leeman six points and five rebounds for 17-4 Calais, while Josh Gillespie came off the bench to contribute eight rebounds.
Knight also had 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for 20-2 Dirigo, while Nic Crutchfield added 12 points and six rebounds.
