BANGOR, Maine — It’s possible that the Mount View girls basketball team was looking ahead to a possible semifinal matchup with undefeated Waterville in the Class B semifinals.

That almost got the fifth-ranked Mustangs of Thorndike knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals.

But coach John Donato’s club came up with several key stops down the stretch, and Alexis Bennett hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to seal a 34-30 victory over No. 4 Mount Desert Island at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday morning.

The Presque Isle boys also sent the Trojans home, as the second-ranked Wildcats defeated No. 10 MDI 47-41 in the earlier contest.

Mount View and Presque Isle advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

In the girls game, the Trojans came out sluggish in the early going, and Mount View took advantage surging to a 20-9 halftime lead.

But MDI grew more aggressive in the second half, attacking the basket more and getting rewarded with several trips to the free-throw line.

Adding insult to injury, the Mustangs’ post players were getting in foul trouble, and 6-foot-1 senior Jessica Adams fouled out barely 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.

After Jessica Swanson converted a backdoor layup with 3:40 to play, giving the Trojans a 30-28 lead, Mount View switched to a triangle-and-two defense, which MDI struggled adapting to. Hayleigh Kein tied the game with 2:54 to play with a steal and layup, while Dakota McAdam’s foul-line jumper gave the Mustangs the lead for good.

McAdam led Mount View with 12 points while Kein and Alexis Bennett contributed six apiece.

Sophomore forward Megan Phelps paced MDI with 10 points while Swanson added seven and Sara Carroll six.

In the boys game, MDI, fresh off its upset of No. 7 Winslow in the preliminary round, looked as if they were going to pull another one early on.

The Trojans embarked on a 10-2 run in the second quarter, capped by Nathan Ward’s fast-break slam dunk, which gave MDI a six-point lead.

But Presque Isle answered, scoring the last seven points of the first half while holding MDI to three field goals in the third quarter, stretching the lead to double digits.

The Trojans got as close as six, but Presque Isle hit its free throws down the stretch to pull away.

Russ Mortland led all scorers with 22 points for the ‘Cats, and was 8-for-12 from the foul line. Travis Dyer contributed 11 points.

Jasper Cousins led MDI with 15 points while Nolan Hall had eight rebounds.
