BANGOR – George H. Moore Sr. died peacefully on Jan. 9, 2009. He was born April 18, 1923, on a farm in Hermon, the son of Evangeline (Webber) and Arlo Moore. He left the farm after graduating from Hermon High School to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1947, when he returned to work and live in Maine until his death. Over many years, he was well known and highly regarded for his involvement in the Bangor/Brewer area business and social community, his work ethic and professionalism, his support of youth sports, his passion for the sport and fellowship of golfing, his love of Maine’s countryside and coast, and his commitment to family and friends. He was blessed with the love and companionship of two extraordinary wives, Germaine Durand of Madawaska, who died in April 1982 and Lois Jean (Bemis) Leighton of Glenburn, who died in November 2007, with each of whom he shared many wonderful years. His first wife, Germaine, gave birth to two sons, Michael, who died in infancy, and George Jr. his only surviving child. He is survived by many loving friends and family members, all of whom will be forever grateful for his many kindnesses, steadfast support, sound guidance, good humor and fine example. His surviving family members include his daughter-in-law, Carolee (Fraser) Moore of Okatie, S.C.; his grandson, David Russell Moore of Vallejo, Calif.; his great-grandson, Jacob Arlo Moore of American Canyon, Calif.; his sister, Frances Sarff of Poway, Calif.; his nephews, Jerry, Vaughn and Verle Drinkwater; his niece, Gayle (Drinkwater) Randolph of Silver Springs, Md.; and his deceased wife Lois’ son, Cary Leighton of Glenburn and his family. He was predeceased by two sisters, Violet Drinkwater and Kay Henry. His remains will be interred in the Moore family gravesite at Mount Pleasant Cemetery this spring. Those who wish to honor George Sr. in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
