SEARSPORT – Esther Kennedy Fowler, 87, died Jan. 16, 2009, in Damariscotta. Esther was born June 23, 1921, in Rangeley, daughter of Mildred (Huntoon) and Issac Bernard Kennedy. Esther graduated from Good Will-Hinckley School in 1939. She went on to attend Farmington Normal School. Later she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine. She taught in the Searsport area for 28 years. Esther loved to travel. She also held offices in many organizations, including the Rebekah’s, local, state and national Grange and Retired Teachers. She enjoyed volunteering, including delivering Meals on Wheels and at Senior Spectrum, Belfast. At the time of her death, Esther was a member of Lighthouse Bible Church, Searsport. Esther is survived by a sister, Mary Hall; as well as by four children, Sharon Sawyer and friend, Ron Leeman, of Wiscasset, Jay and Jane Fowler of Lamoine, Dale and Jane Fowler of Chester, N.H., and Lynda Ward of Searsport. She is also survived by the following grandchildren, Betsy and Chris Keiter, Robert and Tina Lear, Ronald and Pamela Lear, Sandy and Don Toothaker, Perry and Heather Fowler, Holly Fowler and Patrick Richardson, Bryan and Kate Ward, Jeffrey and Jeannette Fowler, Anne and Todd West, Michael and Amanda Fowler, Amy and Roger Brandt, and Scott Ward. She will be greatly missed by the following great-grandchildren, Brian Toothaker, Matthew Toothaker, Kristen Lear, Robert Lear, Kaitlyn Toothaker, Garret Lear, Sally Keiter, Alexander Keiter, Ross Fowler, Olivia Fowler, Anastasia Fowler, Margaret Fowler, Emily West and Katherine Fowler. Through her travels, teaching career and community involvement, Esther made innumerable friends, who will miss her as well. In addition to her parents, Esther was predeceased by two sisters, Sarah and Alice; a brother, Austin; a special aunt and uncle, Hazel and Harry Huntoon; a cousin, Rupert Huntoon; two sons-in-law, Robert Lear and Baxter Ward; and her husband of 34 years, Stephen Gilbert Fowler. At Esther’s request, there will be a celebration of life held 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Lynda Ward’s home in Searsport.
