The Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Energy, each year publishes “The Annual Energy Outlook.” This major document is the work of 400 employees and many subcontractors. The annual budget is nearly $100 million. The appendix contains 40 pages of statistics, listing nearly 30,000 data points. In the coming weeks we will report some of the more bizarre numbers. For starters: The population of the U.S. between 2010 and 2030 will increase a bit less than 1 percent a year, but the over-65 age group will increase at an annual rate of almost 3 percent.
