Husson holds off Colby

By Pete Warner

BANGOR, Maine — Laura Archer of Ellsworth converted four free throws in the final minute and 14 seconds and Husson University made its last 11 free throws Friday night to close out a 79-70 women’s basketball victory over Colby College at Newman Gymnasium.

Senior forward Shelby Bradford of Lee maneuvered through the Colby defense on her way to a game-high 32 points and 15 rebounds as coach Kissy Walker’s ballclub improved to 4-6.

Archer finished with nine points while Bree Hanscom of Mattawamkeag and Lindsay Barnes of Owls Head added eight points each for the Eagles.

Colby (6-4) led by four points (61-57) with 6:29 remaining, but couldn’t put the scrappy Eagles away. Two Archer foul shots with 1:14 left put Husson in front for good.

Backup center Jilian Vaughan headed a list of five Colby double-figure scorers with 13 points and also pulled down 16 rebounds. Sam Allen tossed in 13 points, Julianne Kowalski tallied 13, Aarika Ritchie of Lee posted 11 and Alison Cappelloni added 10.

The visit by Colby provided freshman Ritchie and junior Beth Bartley of Greenville with an opportunity to play nearer their respective homes.

The Mules led 34-30 at halftime, thanks in great part to the inside work of Vaughan. She grabbed eight offensive rebounds among her 11 boards in the half, leading Colby to a 25-16 advantage.

Vaughan also scored 12 points while dominating the action under the basket. She scored four points in the last 1:48 to send the visitors into the locker room on top.

Colby was hampered by 13 turnovers, while Husson committed 10 that cost them some scoring opportunities.

The Mules led by as many as seven points early, but the Eagles used a 10-1 spurt, fueled by two baskets by Noelle Lincoln, to give the hosts some life.

Colby forwards Rachael Mack and Kowalski both had their first-half minutes limited by early foul trouble.
