BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor High School cheering squad will host a season-opening competition at Red Barry Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., with the competition to follow at 6 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students.

Varsity teams from Bangor, Brewer and Hampden Academy will participate, as well as junior varsity squads from Bangor, Brewer, Ellsworth and Hampden Academy.

Each team will perform its competition routine twice, with the average score of the two performances used to determine the winners.

“It’s a chance to finally get the kids out on the mat,” said Bangor coach Stephanie Crane, as all the teams have been practicing since the start of the winter sports season last Nov. 17.

“We’ll be able to get some judges’ feedback and find out what we need to do to get ready for the bigger meets.”

Major competitions for Class A begin with the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships on Jan. 19 at the Augusta Civic Center, followed by the Eastern Maine Class A championship meet on Jan. 24, also at the Augusta Civic Center.

The state championship meet for all classes is set for Feb. 7 at the Bangor Auditorium.

The Big East Conference championship is Jan. 17 in Hermon and the Eastern Class B, C, D finals are at the Bangor Auditorium on Jan. 24.
