SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The EPA is requiring the Maine Mall and nearby hotels, stores and big box developments to clean up stormwater runoff from their roofs, parking lots and sidewalks.

The EPA says the polluted stormwater flows into Long Creek, a tributary of the Fore River that empties into Casco Bay. The action comes in response to a petition by the Conservation Law Foundation.

The EPA is exercising its authority under the Clean Water Act to require property owners to apply for a permit that shows they are taking steps to treat and reduce pollution that flows from properties with one or more acres of parking lots or roofs.

Steve Hinchman from the Conservation Law Foundation calls stormwater “the leading source of water pollution in New England.”
