Mass. team wins 24th Candlepin Bowling World Team Championship

BREWER, Maine — The Maria’s Sub team from Massachusetts handily defeated USA East made up of Maine and Massachusetts bowlers to win the 24th Candlepin Bowling World Team Championship at Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes.

Maria’s Sub claimed the $10,000 prize by beating USA East 1,842-1,721 in the finals. The USA East team pocketed the $5,000 runner-up prize.

USA East finished one point from earning a bye to Halifax Fairlanes of Nova Scotia. USA East de-feated Moncton Fairlanes-Storms, also from Nova Scotia, in the quarterfinals 1,796-1,709 and then beat defending champion Halifax Fairlanes 1,924-1,905.

Maria’s Sub earned a free trip to the semifinals by being the top team in the Holiday Inn Division. They topped MacLaughlin Truck and Trailer 1,914-1,853 to take a trip to the championship game.

It was the first title for Maria’s Sub since they last won in 1998 and the first championship for a U.S. based team since 2001.
