Puppets appeal to young and old alike, and that’s why this week’s first Maine Puppet Theatre Festival, Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 23-25, at the Criterion Theater in Bar Harbor, is sure to attract kids of every age. Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers, Grey Seal Puppets and Nappy’s Puppets, Crabgrass Puppets and the Perry Alley Theatre will all pull the strings behind the colorful, floppy characters featured in the festival. The Frogtown puppeteers, based on Mount Desert Island, are the official sponsors for the event, and will perform two of their popular shows, including “Pirates!” and “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow” (above). The schedule includes Grey Seal at 7 p.m. Thursday, a puppet workshop at 10:30 a.m. Friday and Nappy’s and Perry Alley at 7 p.m. Friday, and Frogtown and Crabgrass starting at 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids; all-inclusive event passes are available. For more, call 207-288-3441 or visit www.criteriontheater.com or www.frogtownpuppets.com.
