MOUNT DESERT — A 15-year-old Southwest Harbor girl died late Wednesday night after she was struck by a vehicle on Route 198 near the Mount Desert Campground, according to police.
Desiree Gray and another 15-year-old girl were walking along Route 198 at about 10 p.m. Wednesday when they were struck by a 2000 Toyota van driven by Rose Iuro-Damon, 52, of Mount Desert, according to a report by Mount Desert Police Chief James Willis.
Officer Jacob Day of the Mount Desert Police Department was on patrol in the area and arrived at the scene at about the same time the call came in to the department.
Gray was taken by ambulance to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor where she died a short time later.
The second girl, whose name was not released, told police that she had been grazed by the vehicle and complained of pain in her left shoulder. She was taken by ambulance to MDI Hospital, was treated and later released.
The accident remains under investigation. Mount Desert police officers were assisted at the scene by Lt. Patrick Kane and Deputy Jeff McFarland of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. Lt. Kane will reconstruct the accident.
Also assisting at the scene were officers from the Bar Harbor Police Department, the Maine State Police and the Mount Desert Fire Department.
