BANGOR, Maine -- Cody Collins scattered five hits over six innings and his teammates backed him with 13 hits Thursday as Bangor Christian claimed the Eastern Maine Class D baseball championship with an 8-3 victory over Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook. Coach Mike Poulin’s fourth-seeded Patriots (18-2) will again play at Mansfield Stadium in Saturday’s state title game against Western Maine champion Buckfield (16-1). Collins, a sophomore righthander, held No. 3 Southern Aroostook (11-5) in check. He mixed a good fastball and a nice overhand curveball while racking up 11 strikeouts. Collins (6-0) also walked five and hit a batter, but was able to pitch out of trouble most of the afternoon to earn the win. Bangor Christian unleashed a relentless offensive assault in his behalf, scoring four times in the first three innings to build a lead it would not relinquish. Ben Bragg and David Peters each knocked in two runs with two singles and Rem Poulin singled and drove in three runs to pace the Patriots. Tucker Rice hit two singles with an RBI, while Zac Palmeter, Brad Wilcox and Collins posted two singles apiece. Losing pitcher Pat Goodall led the Warriors with a two-run double, a single and three stolen bases. Parker Walker singled twice and scored a run. Goodall showed flashes of dominance with the ability to throw a good fastball and a sharp-breaking slider, but the Patriots were able to get the bat on the ball and keep the offensive pressure on the Warriors.
