Teaching through cancer

Gert Nesin, an eighth grade teacher at Leonard Middle School in Old Town, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2013. Even with ongoing chemotherapy treatments, she continues to teach with the help of a long term substitute who is with her daily and takes over class for her during her absences. Nesin, who continues to bring her well-known, upbeat attitude, is using her situation to help her students better understand cancer.
