Former NH House Speaker says Maine fell behind because of heavy taxes

In this excerpt from his keynote address at the Maine Heritage Policy Center’s annual Freedom and Opportunity Luncheon, former New Hampshire House Speaker William O’Brien, a Republican, describes what he says were divergent paths taken by the two states after World War II. Maine, which he said was more prosperous at the time, fell behind economically because it added sales and income taxes, while New Hampshire “stayed with the tried and true course of limited government.”
