Catapults for math modeling

By Gabor Degre, BDN Staff
Brewer High School and United Technology Center students fired off a couple of catapults that were built as part of a math project. Brewer math teacher Angela Szucs said that the goal was to find a real-life situation where an object has a parabolic pathway — such a catapult. The measurements taken from the flight of the catapulted object will enable them to model the launch with mathematics. Students who collaborated in the project settled on a couple of catapult designs that were built on a working scale and tested at the United Technologies Center in Bangor on Tuesday.
