Ernie Clark

Clark, a native of Dover-Foxcroft, has worked at the Bangor Daily News since 1996, initially as a part-time copy editor and later as a fulltime copy editor before joining the sports staff in 2002. Clark primarily covers high school sports including football, boys soccer, wrestling, boys basketball, skiing, baseball and tennis, as well as American Legion baseball and the Senior League World Series. He also writes a weekly column.

Larry Mahoney

BDN sportswriter and columnist Larry Mahoney is a five-time winner of the Maine Sportswriter of the Year award, receiving the award for the fifth time in 2005 during a long and accomplished career. Larry, who started at the BDN in 1972, is perhaps best known to readers for his coverage of college hockey, but also covers a wide range of sports for the BDN on the pro, college and high school levels as well as auto racing. He also produces a Wednesday column, which is an eclectic mix of topics dealing mostly with Maine sports.

Larry, a 1972 Bangor High grad, played football and baseball for the Rams. He and his wife Sally have two sons, Michael and Andrew, both recent college graduates.

Gary Thorne

BDN sports columnist Gary Thorne is an Old Town native and one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting, having covered Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the Olympics, NCAA basketball, football and hockey during his 45-year broadcasting career. He has done play-by-play coverage for 25 MLB seasons and is now a broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles’ MASN-TV, ESPN and the NHL.

Thorne is a 1970 University of Maine graduate and 1973 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law. He has received four Emmys, two for his work with Mets TV and one for his work broadcasting New Jersey Devils hockey.
