BREWER, Maine — A six-hit third inning produced four runs for Bucksport, giving Cassidy Adams all the run support she needed as she pitched a shutout to lead the Golden Bucks to their second consecutive Class C softball state title, a 7-0 victory over Madison Saturday at Brewer High School’s Coffin Field.

“It feels great being 40-0 in these back-to-back seasons, it’s a great way to close out my career in high school,” Adams said.

“[Winning] just feels unbelievable. These kids are just the greatest kids in the world and last year’s team was probably the most talented team I’ve ever had. It’s just a great feeling both years,” said Bucksport head coach Michael Carrier.

Adams pitched six innings, scattering six hits while striking out eight and walking none. Deb Wight paced Bucksport with two singles, one RBI and two runs scored. Kacie Hurd contributed with two singles, one RBI and one run scored.

Bucksport finished its season 20-0, its second undefeated season in a row.

Andie Lawford bunted to reach first base and Bri Bires hit a grounder into left field to start the third-inning rally for the Bucks. Kacie Hurd reached on an infield single to load the bases. Wight hit an RBI single to drive in the first run, followed by Allana Davis’s two-run single to make it 3-0.

“With [Lawford and Bires], we [play small ball] every game, every time they are up. They slap hit, they drag bunts. They do what the defense allows them to do. If [the defense] comes in 100 miles, they are going to slap hit, if they stay back, they are going to drag it down,” Carrier said.

During the next at-bat, Kim Nason laid down a bunt. Wight came in sprinting from third and it appeared Madison pitcher Emily McKenney would beat her, but she couldn’t get around catcher Aly LeBlanc to make the tag in time, and Bucksport took a 4-0 lead.

Cristie Vicneire led off the fifth inning for Madison with a double. Vicneire advanced to third on a groundout by Kayla Booker, and that would be the farthest any Bulldog would get as Adams struck out Samantha Bruce and Kristin Wood to end the inning.

Vicneire led Madison, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single. McKenney pitched seven innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking three.

Western Maine Class C champ Madison ended its season 19-1.

In Bucksport’s half of the fifth inning, Wight singled. The next batter, Davis, hit a grounder, and a throwing error resulted in Wight heading to third base. Jenn Pye’s infield grounder then drove in Wight to extend the lead to 5-0.

Bucksport led off the sixth inning with two walks by Adams and Eliza Hosford. Kaylee Grindle pinch ran for Adams, stole second and made made it to third on a passed ball. After Hosford’s walk, she attempted a steal, and Grindle came home to score the Golden Bucks’ sixth run. After Hosford advanced to third on a ground ball, Hurd hit an RBI single to finish up the scoring.

Vicneire hit a double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Adams got Kayla Booker to ground out to seal the state championship.

“We’ve played a lot of big teams. We’ve played ‘A’ teams, we’ve played a lot of really good ‘B’ teams, we’re just confident we can get it done. We work hard on doing the defensive stuff as you can see, we haven’t had an error in all of the playoff games this year,” Carrier said.

Adams says softball may be in her future at UNE.

“I might be playing for UNE, I’m pretty sure I’ll be trying out for fall ball, I’ve been talking to the coach. I’m still undecided since I’m doing pharmacy so I don’t know how tough it will be,” she said.
