Anglers flocked to West Grand Lake and Pocumcus Lake over the weekend to take part in the West Grand Lake Fishing Derby. The target: lake trout, or as they’re commonly called in these parts, togue. Framed through the arch of a fishing rod, Jonathan James of Eddington adjusts his lines. Later, at the boat landing, Michelle Ferland and her son, Ben — both of Lincoln — show off a nice stringer of togue. State fisheries officials encourage the take of small lake trout in West Grand so that other fish will have enough feed to thrive and grow large. The top winner in the derby (somewhat embarrassingly) was the photographer who submitted these shots, former Bangor Daily News employee Terry Farren. Farren landed a laker that weighed about 6½ pounds and won $1,000 for his efforts.

At the boat landing in Grand Lake Stream, Michelle Ferland and her son Ben both of Lincoln, display a catch of Togue they caught Saturday while entered in the West Grand Lake Fishing derby. The weekend derby also encluded Pocomcus Lake, and was designed to reduce the number of small Togue in the two Lakes, leaving healthy fish overall. Evidence gathered from regional fisheries biologist Gregory Burr's scale showed that goal was accomplished.
