PORTLAND, Maine — Hands, some clutching small flags, came together in a rolling wave of applause as members of VFW Post 6859 marched solemnly down Congress Street Monday morning on their way to Veterans Day observances on the steps of city hall. They were followed by other veterans, the police, fire department, Boy Scouts and a marching band from Deering High School. The modest annual event drew bundled-up onlookers with children and dogs, many removing their hats as color guards paraded Old Glory in front of them.

Wreaths were placed at war memorials at city hall. Mayor Michael Brennan spoke, as well as former State Rep. Herb Adams. At the conclusion, Deering High School junior Katelyn Irish played taps and ceremonial shots were fired into the air by a company of Marine Corps veterans.
